Now due to increased knowledge about migratory birds, namely how they navigate and where they migrate to, it is becoming increasingly important that we increase our levels of conservation to protect these birds.
The above table shows the migratory birds listed as critically endangered by World Migratory Bird Day (n.d.) and there are many more species that are classified as endangered.
There are many methods that we can use to help conserve migratory birds, the first of which is locating the specific resting locations of migratory birds and ensuring that these areas are set aside from any urban development to ensure that the bird species can continue to rest there. Another method is to build urban areas in the way of migration routes in a way that the change in wind currents from the buildings will not affect the birds that are flying overhead. This will ensure that birds are not continuously blown off course as soon as they fly over a city. I believe that more research must also be conducted into the effect of electromagnetic noise on birds using a magnetic compass to navigate, given that there is a possibility this could be affecting the birds without us knowing. Once further research has been conducted, it then becomes possible to solve the problem if there is one, which will greatly assist migratory birds.
Humans need to use the data and resources that have been made available to them in order to protect these birds and ensure that they are still here for generations to come.
